Antique carved cinnabar lacquer dress clip, in an unusual shield shape, in a beautiful gold washed frame of Chinese filigree.
Just over 1 1/4" in height.
It simply says "CHINA" on the clip part. We are not going to test it, as that might damage it, but we have not seen a piece of this type that is not silver, with a gold wash. Many pieces, especially older ones, just were not marked, because there was no requirement that they had to be marked.
The 'China' mark was added around 1920, more than likely, when anything imported into the US had to be marked as to country of origin. Later pieces had to be marked "Made In (Country)"
The patina is lovely, and even.
Original patina, unpolished. In excellent shape. Clip is tight and springy.
These pieces are being snapped up by savvy collectors. When they are gone, they are gone. This is an unusual item, in an unusual style.
