Vintage Mexican Silver Amethyst Bow Brooch Signed VOV 1930s 1940s
I love this amethyst bow brooch & I know you will too! Handmade sometime before 1948, and signed VOV, it's a fine example of the work of the old period Mexican silversmiths. Classically Mexican in style, it combines the elements of the highest quality silver & silver work, along with a large round amethyst cabachon, which was the most popular stone in the glory days of the Mexican Silver Renaissance, & still to this day. The design reflects the influence of the early masters William Spratling & Hector Aguilar. The absence of the eagle assay & the simple hallmarks of this vintage piece dates it to before 1948. Much of the silver used in the early Renaissance was higher purity than 925 (92.5%), so this may be 940 silver or higher. An important piece for your Mexican silver collection, or a wonderful gift!
SIZE: 2-1/4” all around at its widest points
WEIGHT: 23 grams/0.8 oz
HALLMARKS: a)Mexico; b)Silver; c)Appears to be <VOV>
(artist’s signature but I cannot find the owner of this hallmark in my research)
CONDITION: For its age, I consider this condition of this piece to be among the best I’ve ever come across. The pin works with a safety catch.
